The NEAR Protocol Bottom-Up Investment Case

How NEAR Protocol becomes net deflationary at $177M daily volume. Bottom-up analysis: fee mechanics, three valuation methods, and institutional access pathways.

Most institutional research on Layer 1 protocols starts from the top: total addressable market, revenue multiples applied to projected adoption, a target price derived from comparable networks at scale. The assumptions compound quickly, and by the time you arrive at a conclusion, the analysis is as much forecast as it is fact.

The research report we published today with The Tie takes the opposite approach. It starts from a specific, calculable number: the daily volume threshold at which NEAR Protocol becomes net deflationary. Everything else in the report—the valuation comparisons, the scenario modeling, the institutional access analysis—follows from that number and the two structural events that have already moved it.

‍

The Mechanism

NEAR issues approximately 32.2 million tokens annually—roughly $39.3 million at current prices. Two mechanisms offset that issuance. Base-layer gas fees follow a 70/30 split, with 70% permanently burned by the protocol. NEAR Intents fees operate differently: 100% of fees generated through the protocol are used to purchase $NEAR directly, creating market buy pressure that scales with transaction volume.

On October 30, 2025, NEAR's inflation rate was permanently reduced from 5% to 2.5%—cutting annual issuance roughly in half and compressing the volume required to reach net deflation by the same amount. On February 23, 2026, the fee conversion mechanism activated for the first time, routing all NEAR Intents fees into $NEAR purchases. These two events together—reduced issuance, activated fee conversion—are what the model is built around.

At current prices and the 2026 channel-mix-weighted fee rate, the deflationary threshold sits at approximately $177 million in daily Intents volume. The trailing 90-day daily average through February 2026 is approximately $77 million. The base case in our model reaches that threshold in 2026.

The Part That's Underappreciated

The threshold itself is grounded in defined inputs: token issuance, fee rates, and volume. What's less obvious is what happens as it's approached.

As NEAR's price rises, each token purchased via the Intents fee mechanism absorbs more dollar-denominated issuance—meaning price appreciation actively lowers the barrier to deflation in token terms. Volume drives fee-based demand, which drives price, which broadens institutional access, which drives additional volume. The deflationary threshold doesn't stay fixed; it moves in response to the same dynamics working to cross it.

This is the same self-reinforcing mechanic that characterized Ethereum's trajectory following the EIP-1559 fee burn activation in August 2021. The structural parallel is meaningful: NEAR's fee switch and inflation reduction represent the same pair of tokenomic changes—fee conversion plus issuance reduction—at a market capitalization of $1.49 billion versus Ethereum's approximately $300 billion at the time of EIP-1559.

What the Valuation Gap Looks Like

Traditional L1 metrics price NEAR on base-layer gas revenue alone—approximately $7.85 million annualized, implying a price-to-sales ratio of roughly 200x. That metric captures only one revenue stream and misses NEAR Intents entirely.

Annualizing the trailing 90-day fee run rate through the Intents architecture implies approximately $53 million in annual ecosystem fees. On that basis, NEAR's Intents-adjusted P/S is approximately 28x—versus Ethereum at 194x and Solana at 40x. The market is still pricing NEAR on the legacy metric while the protocol generates revenue through a different architecture. As Intents fee data becomes standard on analytics platforms, that gap becomes harder to ignore.

Three Institutional Access Pathways

A year ago, there was no regulated pathway into NEAR for traditional allocators. Today there are three: the Bitwise NEAR Staking ETP on Deutsche Börse Xetra (AUM: $28.3M, 3.08% net staking yield), the Bitwise NEAR Strategy ETF filed with the SEC on December 30, 2025 with an expected effective date of March 16, 2026, and OceanPal (NASDAQ: SVRN), a NASDAQ-listed treasury company with direct NEAR holdings accessible via standard brokerage accounts.

If approved, NEAR would join Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana as one a small number of digital assets with a dedicated U.S. ETF. This potential expansion of the addressable investor base is arriving at the same moment the protocol's fee economics are activating.

The Full Analysis

The report works through the complete model: the coordination architecture, the tokenomics and fee structure in detail, the deflationary threshold sensitivity across price scenarios, three independent valuation methodologies, and probability-weighted scenario ranges through 2030.

It is built from actual fee data and real volume trajectories. The assumptions are stated, the sensitivities are shown, and the threshold is defined by inputs that are observable today—not by what we expect to happen.
